Philosophy of Musical Ecology
We give thanks for life and all our relations
[ NOTE: the following content is abstract philosophy in the English language ;-) . . . The purpose of this prose is to place “Musical Ecology” within the fields of objective and subjective study and give other fellow learners the chance to reflect on the endeavor. If you’d prefer to reflect on the more materialized, educational and community-based manifestations of Musical Ecology, please visit our Ecoversity page. ]
What is Musical Ecology?
Musical Ecology is a way of depicting and experiencing the infinite and eternal symphony of manifold vibrations which are constantly co-creating life and stewarding evolution according to Natural Law.
Musical Ecology describes the dynamic configuration of Nature itself as the frequency-based harmonization of all living systems, however big or small, both on earth and in the cosmic and celestial realms. While “ecology” typically refers to the relationships between living organisms within the sphere of earthly biology, “Musical Ecology” acknowledges the source pattern of organic biology to originate within the realm of Divine Consciousness, affirming the scientifically verified fact that all life is inherently vibrational. Musical Ecology openly accepts that the study of organic biological systems can no longer be separated from astrological, celestial, universal and inter-dimensional systems, nor can such study be separated from one’s own subjectivity.
In relation to human behavior and individual and collective consciousness, Musical Ecology is a reality-based way of Being informed by the subjective and objective truth that all relative matter vibrates and creates a sound, and this sound has its source in eternal, unchanged Consciousness. Thus, Musical Ecology unites the biological with the ethereal, the material with the spiritual, the organic with the celestial. As Maharishi Mahesh Yogi says, “All life hums with the organizing power of Natural Law.”
Musical Ecology fuels the whole endeavor of life
Unlike ethnomusicology or ecomusicology which are fields of attempted objective study into the interconnected worlds of sound, nature and human culture on earth, “Musical Ecology” refers directly to – and inherently reflects – the living reality of Nature, the Field of cosmic diversity, and the vibrations or sounds which naturally and easefully harmonize such vast diversity in an exquisite and perpetually creative order. To glean the highest truth, knowledge and bliss from this diversity, one must feel and experience the underlying unity.
For example:
The entire organic earth environment-energy is a musical ecology.
The birdsong at sunrise is a musical ecology.
The human body with its various complimentary physiological systems is a musical ecology.
The solar system is a musical ecology (re: “Music of the Spheres”).
A person in the flow-state of creative expression or optimum athletic prowess is a musical ecology.
All the events and actions (karma) happening at any given moment are a musical ecology.
A human community is a musical ecology, whether harmonious or otherwise.
Every thing, every action, and all of the vast expanse of life on earth and beyond is held together or harmonized by the most powerful vibrational forces underlying the quantum fields. Many refer to the mysterious lynchpin of the quantum realm as the force-field “gravity”. Musical Ecology refers to this as “Love”. Love, or gravity, is conceptual, for Love-gravity represent the primordial thought-sounds of the silent Absolute purity of unchanging Consciousness (God, Creator) which are manifesting the ever-expanding, multi-dimensional, communicative, interconnected, material universe (Creation). Creator or Consciousness are immaterial, they are Source. The vibrational reverberations of Consciousness are the first sounds. Space upon receiving these sounds proliferates them in such delight as to create everything in perfect order. The “sound” of this transmission is the original din, the Om, a sound that Is before and beyond even the Music of the Spheres.
Direct experience of the Musical Ecology unfolds knowledge and potential for service
One cannot seek to grasp or study the Musical Ecology; one inherently IS – and thus directly experiences it as living reality. From this point of awareness accessed through direct experience, one grows in consciousness with participation in the Field of total knowledge and quickly fulfills one’s potential as a fully sovereign being in harmony with the universe, with Creator, and with all of Creation, in order to do the best good possible in Love for all life. From the perspective of Musical Ecology, I am a musician in the grand symphony of life. And even more to the point, in the words of Hafiz, “I am a hole in the flute that the Christ’s breath moves through. Listen to this Music.”
And so, Musical Ecology is the active and aware pursuit of one’s own life in service to All. In this way of Being, Musical Ecology reveals itself most wholistically and efficiently through our commitment to raising collective Consciousness, and thus Musical Ecology is also a community-building endeavor rooted in Love.
Since all material life is the consequence of vibration and the invisible workings of Love, the art of listening becomes the only standard curriculum for being a human capable of accessing the infinite gifts of self-aware consciousness. If we continually act without awareness of the Sound, we lose ourselves to the temporal appeal and incessant movement of the relative and ever-changing material domain. Rooted in Musical Ecology, every single action, attitude, practice and study of life are perceived as part of the Sound through our mastering of the art of listening. From this point of unity, we can truly trust our intuition as a guide, for our lives and the infinitely complex diversity of our environments are a natural unfolding of greater awareness of the Musical Ecology which unites them.
As Beautiful Painted Arrow’s grandmother once taught him in the Picuris Pueblo village, “It is through listening that you become a true human, and a true human is a listener who is constantly attuned by working with everything that is happening.”
Listening heals because listening is the ultimate art and skill to restore balance
A life that is consciously derived from and empowered by Musical Ecology is one which listens deeply within one’s self and learns to resonate with subtler levels of thought, feeling, and vibration. From this sensitive place, one quietly unites mind and action with finer levels of intuition and sources of manifestation. Deep within one’s own consciousness, one hears the hum of Consciousness itself, thus completing the cycle of life.
The collective cultural disease of separation is spread by individuals consistently choosing a path of action without listening. One could also call this “independence”. Listening becomes the crucible for transcending the attachment to individual ego and desire, and for raising one’s own consciousness to meet the interconnectedness of all life which can be described as the Musical Ecology. Mastering the art of listening releases two birds with one hand: as you surrender attention to the sound within, you liberate your mind from attachments that breed separation, while also transforming every thought (vibration) into a sound that emerges in natural harmony with the All Sound, thus supporting the healthy evolution of all manifest life.
In the context of life on earth for mortal-embodied souls, the reality of a Musical Ecology is a salve and solution for the fear that can emerge within attachment to duality. At any given time, duality can suppress our creative power when it is then synthesized in our minds as separation. However, when crystalized through the awareness of Unity, duality surrenders – through the art of deep listening – to a loving abidement in relationship. We are born in mortal bodies and so our souls are cast as incarnations into an evolving environmental chaos of individuation, materiality, and exile. Yet relationship, or belonging, is the only true Reality. Relationship is a given for the deep listener. Relationship is a birthright, and when this truth is fully known, we realize a very practical spirituality.
Musical Ecology is about transforming our daily observation of life into a ritual, which as Orland Bishop notes, is the core feature of initiation. Initiation is a much more ancient, indigenous, cosmic and profound synonym for education. The bridge to fulfillment of purpose and potential as an individual human being on earth is to perceive one’s every moment as a process of initiation. What are we being initiated into? The grand Musical Ecology. What a delight!
Musical Ecology as education through initiation for re-villaging
“Initiation is a psychological and spiritual regeneration. Initiation is the process of renewing commitments to the higher purpose and aspirations of life. In an initiatory process, life potential is enhanced. It includes larger spheres of influence into which the human individual can live and act. Initiation is an expansion of the capacity to direct one’s life. Initiation connects to the realms of the beings of nature and the beings of the cosmos, through the frameworks of one’s culture. Initiation is the growth of consciousness to integrate the will to be oneself at a given time and place. It can happen and does happen at any moment when, through their circumstances, human individuals are separated from what is familiar. We are turned toward the unknown. Characteristics of this turn are uncertainty and the search for meaning. We encounter various dilemmas as we navigate the initiatory path. We remake the agreements that connect us to our life’s purpose. Finding coherence within the primary agreements of our life, we call the return coming home to self. We are then able to integrate this self into the community where we can serve and where we are seen as the bearer of gifts, our creative inner expression is toward the world. All of the separation and dilemmas are then understood. They are necessary to the achieving of wholeness and integrity of spirit and right relationship to the world.” (Orland Bishop, The Seventh Shrine, p. 94)
A balm for this sense of exile on an evolving planet is, on another level of practicality, the pursuit of purpose and the realization of community in the process of re-villaging. Re-villaging is a restoration of our relationship with All Life, culminating in the experience of growing together harmoniously with fellow human beings who are capable of total awareness of personal identity, collective mission, and cosmic consciousness.
Re-villaging is the practical fulfillment of Musical Ecology as realized by human beings on the earthly plane, and so our education model is grounded in the primary source-points of village knowledge, ethics, productivity and abundance: 1) Land & water stewardship, 2) Rites of passage, and 3) Creative and healing arts. Supported by the primary spiritual practice of meditation — which unlocks human potential, integrates mind, body and heart and seals the experience of unity in diversity — apprenticeship in these three realms of learning is surely sufficient to wholistically educate our youth and generate the highest possible quality of life on earth.
We give thanks for the opportunity to be here together in this place and in this time for our continued evolution in the Way . . .
